We're huge fans of the folks on college campuses who dedicate themselves to supporting queer and trans college students as advisors, student support service staff or by way of “other duties as assigned.” The work performed by these individuals is often thankless or beyond their job description but plays a huge part in creating affirming spaces and experiences for queer and trans college students.
We recognize this work and hold space for these roles who often attend the conference with their student groups. Advisor programming at MBLGTACC consists of an evening social, dedicated workshop track, and special roundtables. Refer to the full MBLGTACC conference schedule for all available details about dates/times.
The advisor social is the collective sigh of relief on Friday evening after a long day of travel, and for many, getting their large group of students to the conference location. Advisors are invited to join for a social hour with appetizers and treats and meet other advisor attendees before the day wraps up.
Advisor Roundtables are a spin on the identity forums hosted during the conference. Advisors are invited to spend time discussing shared experiences, collective needs, and decide how to make the most of the session together. These will be scheduled at various times during the conference and details about each roundtable will be available in the program guide closer to the conference date.
Content will focus on:
Tools to support advisors, higher education practitioners and other roles that support college students carry out their vital work
Aiding advisors and practitioners in navigating complex campus environments and overcoming workplace barriers, burnout and other hardships of their positions
Showcasing innovative and groundbreaking scholarship, research, programming and other initiatives that contribute to a culture of higher education in which sexuality and gender diversity is celebrated
We use “advisor” loosely and understand that there are many roles that support LGBTQ+ college students and queer and trans communities around college campuses. You might be:
an LGBTQ+ resource center professional,
a gender-affirming therapist who works with college-aged clients,
faculty or an instructor,
that really rad queer librarian who keeps dental dams and indie zines on their desk for students to take, or
serving in another student support role!
MBLGTACC is also a lower cost, high value professional development experience for graduate students.
Share these outcomes with your supervisor or professional development coordinator when you request funding. Attendees of the advisor programming at MBLGTACC can look forward to:
Deeply examining policies, practices and trends in the field of LGBTQ+ student support services and related functional areas
Presentations on promising new practices for supporting LGBTQ+ college students
Connections with other professionals in social, discussion and workshop spaces
Insight into what topics and activities are important to LGBTQ+ college students
Exposure to keynotes and workshop presenters that could be future considerations for bringing to your respective campus
Stay up-to-date on all events, news, announcements, and more.
